Emotional Eating and Thought Field Therapy: Thinking Your Way To A Healthier You
Do you struggle with emotional eating and food cravings? Do you use food for comfort? If so, have you ever thought about using Thought Field Therapy (TFT) to stop eating when you are not hungry? TFT is a powerful evidence-based therapy method that has been shown to help people deal with the reasons behind their unhealthy eating habits, for example, anxiety, stress, and anger. TFT tapping is simple to learn and can be done in the comfort of your own home or anywhere you want.
In this post, we will discuss what TFT is, how it can help end emotional eating, and how to make lifestyle changes that will energise your life. This post explains why thinking your way to a healthier you works.

What is Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
Dr. Roger Callahan, a psychologist, developed Thought Field Therapy (TFT), an alternative therapy, in the 1980s. It is based on the idea that emotional stress is related to disruptions in the body’s energy fields and that, by using specific tapping techniques, we can create balance and harmony in our energy fields to help alleviate emotional and mental distress. TFT, also called tapping therapy, is a healthy alternative to long-term or drug-based therapy that is very effective, doesn’t hurt, and can be done on your own.
Interestingly, TFT is known to work a lot of the time when nothing else does. People have used it to lose weight, quit smoking, deal with trauma, heartache, stress, anxiety, and many other things.
TFT uses a tapping sequence to balance the body’s energy system. This lets you get rid of most bad feelings in just a few minutes and helps the body heal itself.
TFT can be used to solve the following problems quickly and easily:
- Depression
- Panic and worry
- Anger, shame, and guilt
- Problems in relationships
- Pessimism
- Bad habits
- Weight reduction challenges, for example, emotional eating, emotional eating habits, binge eating and overeating
- Self-sabotage, among other things
How Does TFT Differ From EFT?
TFT is different from other types of tapping therapy, for example, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in that it does not involve repeating statements or require a lot of focus and hard work. Instead, it can be practiced in short sessions, giving you the flexibility to fit it into your schedule. So, it is an easy-to-use and inexpensive tool for anyone who wants to stop emotional overeating and improve their health. TFT is also non-invasive, so it is safe to use at home or when you are travelling.
How Can TFT Help End Emotional Eating?
TFT can provide great benefits if you are struggling with emotional eating and compulsive overeating. A better understanding of why you overeat can help you make better food choices and, in the long run, lead to healthier habits. Also, the practice of tapping can be used to help reduce stress and anxiety and manage intense emotions, all of which can help stop the cycle of emotional eating.
With dedicated practice, you can achieve improved health and a better relationship with food. When it comes to emotional eating, TFT works by addressing the underlying emotional causes of overeating. This is done by tapping on certain parts of the body that are linked to how you feel and what you think.
Tapping is an important part of TFT as it helps to disrupt stuck thinking patterns that lead to emotional eating. It also helps to move the extra energy that is often behind emotional eating in a different direction. Tapping sends a signal to the brain that stops the patterns of cravings and helps restore balance in the body.
TFT is not just about tapping, though. It is also about changing negative thoughts into positive ones. Negative self-talk can lessen the amount of emotional eating by doing this. TFT helps change negative thoughts into positive ones, which can make it less important to eat when you’re upset.
Lastly, TFT also helps to strengthen the connection between the mind and the body. This can be beneficial if you tend to overeat because of your emotions as it helps to bring awareness to your body’s signals and cues that can help control the urge to emotionally overeat.
Using TFT for Emotional Eating
TFT is an innovative, evidence-based approach to emotional wellness that helps you by using your own personal energy to release emotional states and unwanted behaviours. This kind of therapy is especially good for helping you understand and stop emotional eating, which is defined as eating when you’re feeling bad. It is often used to help you make effective lifestyle changes that lead to healthier eating habits.
The main goal of TFT when treating emotional eating is to help you break the habit of emotional eating. To do this, a therapist works with you to seek out and address potential reasons for emotional eating. These may include stress, trauma experiences, environmental influences, cultural norms, or other psychological and emotional components that may be influencing your behaviour. However, you can also do TFT tapping in the privacy of your home.
What happens when you do the tapping? TFT uses the energy system of the body to reach the subconscious mind and help find the emotional triggers that often lead to emotional eating. Once these triggers have been identified, you can work on ways to self-regulate and find better ways to deal with stress. This type of therapy also emphasises mindful eating, where you are encouraged to become aware of physical cues, sensations, and triggers that may lead to emotional eating.
Preparing for the TFT Process
Preparing for the TFT process can be a key part of achieving successful results. Here are a few steps to consider before beginning the TFT process to help optimise your results and get the most out of the therapy.
First, it is important to be mindful of your own body and mind. Be aware of what you’re thinking and feeling, and think about whether they’re helping you or holding you back. Make a list of the thoughts, emotions, and coping mechanisms associated with emotional eating and note how they affect you physically and emotionally. This can help you figure out the thoughts and feelings that are causing you to eat in unhealthy ways.
Next, it is important to choose a goal that you would like to focus your TFT on. This can be a goal related to emotional eating, such as reducing cravings or managing stress, or any other goal that you would like to work on. Setting a goal that can be reached quickly, like losing one pound or kilogram, can help keep you motivated and hold you accountable.
Thirdly, it can be helpful to develop a plan of action and practice the techniques that will be used in the TFT process. This can include learning the basics of the TFT tapping sequence and the techniques used to deal with the emotional triggers that lead to emotional eating. Also, practicing self-compassion and self-care, like using relaxation techniques or keeping a journal, can help create a more balanced way to deal with stress.
Applying TFT Technique to Cope with Emotional Eating
The first step in using TFT to stop emotional eating is to figure out what bad feelings cause the overeating. It is important to understand the root cause of your emotional eating. Once you’ve found the emotion, you need to focus on it and use a tapping sequence to tap in a steady, rhythmic way on certain energy pathways in your body. This tapping helps to release the blocked energy and restore balance in the body. Doing this daily will help you free yourself from emotional eating.
Step 1: Rate the intensity of the urge on a scale of 1 to 10. A number 1 means you have no desire to eat and are quite content not to. A number 10 means you can’t stop yourself, and you are already eating.
Step 2: Tap around 10 times with your index and middle fingers on the following points:
- side of the hand
- under your nose
- under one of your eyes
- 4 inches below the armpit, under your arm
- on your collarbone
Step 3: Tap the Gamut spot (see the image) and:
- Close your eyes
- Keep your eyes open.
- Maintain a level head and look down and to the left with your eyes.
- Maintain a level head and look down and right with your eyes.
- Make a full circle with your eyes in one direction.
- Make a full circle with your eyes in the other direction.
- Hum a few beats of any song (I usually hum “happy birthday,” but you can hum any song that you like).
- Count from one to five.
- Hum the song once more.
- Count from five to one.
Step 4. Reconsider the intensity of the urge to overeat. Repeat as necessary. Once you are happy that the urge to overeat has stopped, look up to the roof (sky) with your eyes and then all the way down to your feet (floor).
Making Lifestyle Changes to Re-Energise Your Life
The last step to getting healthier with TFT and emotional eating is to make lifestyle changes that will help you feel more energised and in control of your life. This can include changes to your daily habits, such as setting up a regular exercise routine, reducing your consumption of unhealthy foods, and getting enough sleep.
Making lifestyle changes can also include mental and emotional shifts. Putting in the time to develop positive thinking habits such as saying affirmations can be helpful because it lets you focus on the good things in your life instead of letting negative thoughts and feelings take over. Also, it’s important to learn how to recognise and talk about your feelings in a healthy way. Allowing yourself to really feel your emotions rather than trying to push them away is a great way to create awareness of what is going on in your body and mind and how it impacts your overall health and well-being.
Lastly, it can be very helpful to take time for yourself and do things that make you happy and calm down. This could involve anything from creative hobbies, to taking a walk in nature, to listening to your favourite music. If you find yourself becoming stagnant, these activities can help you break free and re-energise.
Reframing Negative Thoughts
TFT will help you figure out what bad thoughts or feelings might be making you want to eat too much. Once these are known, it is important to change your thoughts and feelings about them to more positive ones. This can be done in several ways, including through journaling, meditation, visualisation, increasing your self-esteem and self-love.
Journaling is a powerful tool for helping to reframe negative thoughts. Putting your thoughts and feelings on paper can help you see patterns and give you a chance to question them. For example, if you find yourself thinking “I’m not good enough,” you can reframe it as, “I am enough.” Writing these positive affirmations can help to instill them in your mind and shift the way you think and feel.
Meditation can also be a helpful way to reframe negative thoughts by becoming more mindful. It can help to create a calm and relaxed state, which can make it easier to look inside yourself and identify the sources of your negative emotions. Once identified, you can then challenge these thoughts, replacing them with more positive ones. Meditation can also help you develop self-compassion, which is important if you want to learn to accept and love yourself.
Lastly, visualisation can also be a helpful tool for reframing negative thoughts. Visualising a positive outcome or future can help create positive emotions and shift the way you think. For example, if you have trouble not eating too much, you can picture yourself as healthy and full of energy. This can help remind you of the benefits of reframing your thoughts and motivate you to keep moving forward.
By using TFT and reframing your negative thoughts, you can take control of your eating habits this year and work towards better health. With practice and commitment, you can learn to think your way to a healthier you.
Making Positive Choices
It’s important to make good decisions and choices if you want to get healthier and stop overeating because of your emotions. With regular TFT practice, you will begin to identify patterns in your body that are associated with negative emotions, allowing you to make better decisions about your health.
At its core, TFT is about changing the way you process and respond to stress. Through TFT, you can begin to identify and process your emotions in a healthy way and make more positive decisions that result in better health. Taking the time to practice mindful eating and being aware of what makes you feel stressed can also help you eat less when you’re upset.
It can also be helpful to create an overall plan to make positive changes related to physical, mental, and emotional health. This plan should include goals, strategies, and timelines for implementing each goal. Having the help of family and friends can also help keep you motivated and on track.
By making positive decisions and choices with the help of TFT and other health-promoting strategies, you can make strides in managing emotional eating and improving your overall health and well-being.
In this post you have learned that TFT is a powerful tool if you want to stop eating based on your emotions and improve your health. TFT tapping has been studied and improved for decades, making it a powerful and safe alternative to traditional treatments for emotional eating and unhealthy eating habits. The evidence shows that TFT for emotional eating works best when used with other changes to your lifestyle.
However, the key to a successful TFT experience is to commit to it. Regular practice and dedication can help create lasting change. When used alongside lifestyle changes and other therapies, TFT offers a powerful way to gain control over your eating and create a healthier version of yourself.
